Donny Daniels: Mid Term Grade
Much excitement abounded at zagnation with the hiring of former Assistant UCLA Coach Donny Daniels. He was supposed to be a super recruiter and a "Big Man" specialist. Well, half of his first season has passed, so let's take a quick look at how he is doing.
The BIG MEN and some of their numbers:
Robert Sacre- ppg 15.2, rebounds 6.8, free throw .837%...much much better.
Elias Harris- ppg 12.5, rebounds 5.6, free throw .750%...lower than last year except FF% which is higher. A bit of a mixed bag. Perhaps he is still not 100% healthy?
Kelly Olynyk- ppg 6.7, rebounds 4.6, free throw .638%. Surprisingly enough, all much improved.
*No info to compare on Dower as he did not play last year.
They are ALL committing more turnovers which I found surprising. I would have thought because Sacre seems to be holding the ball up higher, passing out of the double more effectively, and putting the ball in the hole quicker that it would not be the case. But it is.
There are of course other stats to look at but I just wanted to try to get a general feel. We could look at the Zags record too but I wanted to keep it simple...for now. The stat that really stands out is the dramatic improvement in free throw shooting % and it makes me curious as to if Daniels should get credit for that, or someone else.
Anyways...How do you feel he is doing? Where can he improve? Is he a good "fit" as a coach for the Zags? Is he in any way, responsible for Gonzaga being in 4th place in the W.C.C.?

Tough one but
I’m not at practice so I don’t know how much he’s brought in. Someone though, has taught Rob about keeping the ball high and looking for the pass! I’ve seen ZERO evidence of game coaching from here in Sequim. Too early to tell about recruiting….Zach and Max pointed out who they like in their post so that could be a big test!!! I truely miss Rice but not Grier at all.
You have to look at the total package
as both a big man coach and recruiter. Our two true “big men” Sacre and Dower have had outstanding improvements. I’d almost give him an A+ just for finally being able to tap Rob’s enormous talent. Looking at Dower’s play right now it’s hard to imagine how anyone could redshirt him. And from a recruiting standpoint, how much did Daniels have to do with sealing the deal with GBJ, of whom I can barely contain my excitement for
? I don’t doubt Jr would be a Golden Bear next year if Daniels hadnt transferred his recruiting prowess our way. No doubt too early to tell but thumbs up!

Mark Few got Gary Bell Jr.
This was the 1 recruit Coach Few got totally on his own. He has been all over GBJ since he was I think a sophomore in highschool. Usually all the recruits are done by the assistants but this was all Mark Few on this one.
Agree but... Are we sure Daniels was not instrumental in sealing the deal?
I wonder if we will ever know.
Its gonna be gLoRiOUS!!~
Success and failure
Daniels seems to have done his magic with Robert Sacre, but what he can’t control is how Sacre gets the ball from his guards. He’s bobbled more than his share of passes and players like Meech often don’t have a clue about how to get him the ball.
He has failed somewhat with Kellly. The kid is looking over his shoulder and still playing timid. Kelly should be scoring from inside and out. He should be getting double-doubles every game and making some intimidating blocks. But I don’t see it yet.
Daniels has failed with Elias , big time, assuming that Elias is considered a big. Elias is slow, paunchy, predictable (that dipping shoulder foul that the refs call every time). He often blows put backs and muffs unguarded threes and is like an island out there with four unknown teammates.
So overall, Daniels record is one win (Sacre) and two losses (Kelly) and (Elias).
