Another terrible WCC year?

So, yesterday two of the supposed "improved" WCC teams, Santa Clara and LMU, lose to Houston Baptist and Morgan State!? Prior to yesterday, the winners' combined record was 5-14. They join USF, Portland, Pepperdine, USD as doormats for mediocre teams. That leaves St. Mary's, who only plays chumps, and BYU. Guess it's going to be Zags vs. BYU this year. BYU is wondering why they joined the league! We'll be lucky if 2 WCC teams make the dance, with the league RPI so low.

WCC

I think your list is a little short – USF has won something like 7 in a row, is 9-3 with two of the losses to Murray State who I think is undefeated and New Mexico State. Very balanced line-up and always gives Gonzaga fits. I agree about the others for the most part but Santa Clara has two or three guys who can go off on a given night – Kevin Foster, Evan Roquemore, and Niyi Harrison (sp.). Not saying that Gonzaga, BYU, and St. Mary’s are not the class of the conference. Your point about the RPI is very valid, I’m talking more about the league games.

not a little short, but a little early

A couple of days later it just looks worse. Last night St. Marys lost (OK- Baylor is very good), Pepperdine lost (WSU), USF lost (to 5-7 Holy Cross), USD lost (to a decent S. Alabama team), and Portland got creamed by Nevada (who in turn had been creamed by BYU).
So, we go back to BYU and the Zags being the cream of the WCC; St. Marys being decent (one quality win vs. N. Iowa), and the rest of the league in the dumper.

"decent" South Alabama team?

that’s a pretty bad loss for anyone in the conference besides Portland and USD.

Being a little short sighted aren't we?

The WCC is way up this year. Only two teams have below .500 records and we’ve added a legit tourney team in BYU. I mean, LMU always drops games to teams they have no business losing to and winning one’s they have no business winning – that’s LMU.

Zags and BYU are good, but the WCC will disappoint a lot of people this year in terms of progression

although I don’t think we will stroll through the conference undefeated, I think it’s pretty bad outside of us and BYU, who is a close second and true WCC title contender (unlike SMC who folded after taking a chink on the armor last year). Whatever the opposite of resiliency is, SMC defined it last year—and graduated all of their leadership who represented almost all of their scoring ability. SMC’s only test was tonight and they get ran on by Baylor..Dellavedova: 9 pts in 40 minutes. He was 3-10 shooting and 1-8 from 3. 10 shots in a full 40 minutes? Sounds like a superstar to me!

I don’t think teams are challenging themselves enough in OOC to hang with us and BYU in the standings over a 16-game season. We are somewhat tested, but some of these OOC schedules/results from WCC teams simply have me shaking my dome in disgust. I was hoping for a big jump in the WCC this year, and I don’t see it. The RPI boost we were hoping for is likely not going to happen. Zags and BYU will have a great race for the 1 seed.

BYU and us will finish with 1-3 conference losses, then a couple teams (one being SMC) will go 10-6. I think the rest of the conference is about where they were last year (BYU is largely unproven and SMC is worse) and we are much better at this point than last year.

We are too deep and talented to lose any conference game but the one in Provo… unless we beat ourselves. That means it’s all about preparation, so we are about to find out a lot about Mark Few as a coach.

WCC made a big mistake by not going after SDST and Boise St

The WCC wants to stay “private” I get it, but if they want some real respect they need to add more good schools private or state! If they want to be a high rated Non-BCS conference like the A-10 they should have added SDST and Boise St. Here are the RPI of WCC schools
Gonzaga 11
St. Mary’s 42
BYU 60
SC 129
SF 162
Portland 199
L-M 213
Pepperdine 262
SD 293

SDST 51
Boise St 131

Both of these schools would be in the top half of the league. SDST is in the Top 25 (Polls) and has some respect nationally as does Gonzaga, BYU…St. Mary’s is getting a little. WCC wants to add Air Force if they join the Big East in Football. Which they will once Navy joins in 2013 (they are working out scheduling and TV deals now, but Navy has said its a done deal.) Air Force 211 RPI they are a middle of the pack team/school that adds a good TV market but not a toury team.

I think they should have added all 3 teams for a 12 team conference. That would have given the conference a lot more respect and bettered their RPI. I just think the WCC missed big by not trying to get SDST or Boise St. because they are State schools. Not many other good Bball schools out west to add to the conference.
