Guy Landry Edi Expectations

The Zags finished off Oral Roberts tonight in a less than inspiring fashion. At times, they ran great offensive sets only to follow up by giving up an easy basket at the defensive end. Other times, they looked completely lost on offense while playing stifling defense after turning it over.

This team has essentially been consistently inconsistent all year long. The question I have is what will Guy Landry do for this team? What are our expectations for Edi coming in for the final 3/4 of the regular season

I think those that expect him to come in and average 12 pts, 6 reb, 2 steals, and 0 TOs right away will be let down. Edi is a JC transfer and as we saw with Carter last year and with other JCs in year's past, there is an adjustment period. While I think he will certainly help this team right off the bat on the offensive end, his main impact will be on the defensive end, matching up in most cases, against the opposing team’s best player.

This team is more than one player away from being an elite team. Inconsistent guard play, coupled with a “deep” frontcourt that until tonight, showed no depth. I think Edi is a great option for Few. I’d wager he sees 15 minutes of game time against Arizona, based on his athleticism and defensive ability alone. Early in his season, I don’t see Edi making a large impact on the stat sheet, but by the end of season, I wouldn't be surprised to see the numbers listed in the above paragraph in conference play. Only time will tell how Edi impacts this team, but I for one, am excited to see what the kid can do come Saturday! Go Zags!

EDI

I am very excited to see Edi in action, I believe in time he will be a huge asset to the lineup. I have no expectaion right now because it is tough to come in 1/4 of the way into the season against a team like AZ and expect too much. It will take a few games for him to get in the flow against tough opposition, but I expect he will start for conference play.

I remember watching him during Kraziness in the Kennel and he looked great, smooth/athletic, had a nice stroke and a great dunk. He will provide a spark and give us an elite athlete…makes me think of the days when we had Errol Knight and Ira Brown,,,we need someone that has that athletic ability.

Hopefully he finds chemistry with the guys on the floor fast…as of right now I dont see that chemistry Few talks about with the group of guys on the floor, its hard to see it when we are turning the ball over nearly 20x a game,

My first reaction

is SAVE US. More realistically, I expect him to come out and be aggressive on defense, get some boards, and cause some havoc for the other team. Basically, a better Mike Hart and somebody who is a natural sf.

Eventually I expect him to make an impact on offense, but I think that will take time.

Big help on defense initially.

The hopefully he will give us a boost on offense as he gets more comfortable. I’m excited that we won’t have to have Stocks and Pangos on the floor so much together. That group makes us to small to defend the perimeter and makes us subject to having our guards posted up. I’m surprised more teams haven’t done that yet. He should be a big help if he’s as good as we all hope he is.

Not a saviour yet, but, come on!!!

anyone who questions whether we are upgrading, no diss to Hart, is crazy… how much of an upgrade, happily, will soon be revealed…CAN’T WAIT

I don't expect him to be perfect

but if he is an upgrade over Hart defensively (he already is offensively) and we can lock down a team’s two top scorers outside of the low post, we could be a legit top 15 team. If guy is fits in perfectly, we catapult to top 10 status and go undefeated in the WCC. I just can’t see a WCC team scoring enough to beat us when their top 2 guards/ guard and SF are disrupted offensively. We haven’t had this much athleticism on the perimeter in.. ever?

Guy will make us better right away, the question is—by how much? Eventually, I envision two Erroll Knights (GBJ+Edi) that can shoot the 3 with some consistency and make athletic plays near the basket. The season truly starts for us tomorrow vs Arizona.

All I've heard about Edi

is his spectacular defense, length, and athleticism. I’m excited/cautiously optimistic for what he can do on the offense end. With his athleticism I would imagine he would project to be a good slasher to the hoop which makes Pangos, Bell, and other perimeter shooters better. I have no idea what to expect out of his 3pt shot. Can’t wait to find out!

It will depend on how the game goes.

I think we beat AZ without him.

If the game is well in hand, look for Edi to get a lot more time on the floor. If things are close, he might not see much PT.

Hart is going to start. Hart will probably play 15min. Like it or not, folks, Hart has paid his dues. That is not to say that Edi might not supplant Hart in the future.

Edi may well take some time, maybe a lot of time to come up to speed. There is no need to rush him – no urgency of any kind right now. Look for Few to limit his minutes and spend a lot of time coaching him (well not Few personally but the other staff).

If he takes off like a rocket he we will all have smiles after the game!

Hart will improve.

Edi’s presence will help Hart improve his offensive output as well as force him to play more intelligently on defense (i.e., not fouling a shooter on any already-launched three pointer.
It’s the law of competition or natural selection. Edi too will benefit from the competition.
Both know who they must beat out to get more playing time. And don’t count out the dark horse Spangler. He is perfectly capable of becoming a solid three. In fact on many a practice day he pops better from beyond the arc than anyone on the team.

Gu can't afford more minutes for Hart vs anybody on the team!

If Hart increases minutes played per game this year, Gu will not make the play-offs and I would expect a 3-5 game loss in league standings. That’s how bad a move increased minutes for Hart would be!

I expect Guy to hit the ground running

a lot like Harris as a Fr. Guy is older and played a lot of ball from JC to Ivery Coast National Team. He is a beast and all Zag fans will konw it after todays game. No I don’t think he’ll score 30 pts. but he will be our #1 defender the second he walks on the court (no disrespect to GBJ who has been the best defender up until now) he is super athletic, rebounds well, he can hit the 3 pt shot (40% in JC), and most importantly he will allow the others around him to play their natural positions.

As many people have said before the 3 guard line up of Pangos, Stockton, Bell can only be on the court for limited minutes against top level compatition. With Guy, KP and DS can both get a little more rest and not have to try to guard super athletic shooting guards (insert Nick Johnson) that can be GBJ roll (as he can defend those types of players) he wont have to try and guard 6-5 or 6-6 SF’s as Guy will be their. It also puts MH back to that energy guy who comes off the bench and gives 150% for 3-5 minute spans. Which he did a great job at last year when the Zags made the turn at mid-season.

With players in the right positions this team will be much more successful. Guy will bring stability to the 3 spot and that will only help the young guards, which translates to better oppertunities for the big man.

No he is not a Savior…but he may be the missing puzzle piece we all have been looking for!

Go Zags!
