Landry's suspension longer than brawl participants in X/Cincy game
http://www2.journalnow.com/sports/2011/dec/12/wssport02-xavier-cincinnati-brawl-results-in-suspe-ar-1702940/
In this article (can't do a link right now for some reason) it shows the suspensions for the players involved in the fight at the end of the Xavier-Cincinnati game. Yancey Gates, the player who threw the ball at Holloway's face and hit two other players in the face, GOT 6 GAMES. Number 13 on Cincinnati (he's not worth having his name mentioned) kicked a defenseless Kenny Frease in the face when he was on the ground... the suspension? SIX GAMES. Guy Landry Edi got an 8 game suspension for playing basketball and not fighting. I wouldn't be so worked up if there was a mention of the NCAA extending the suspensions, but I am yet to hear anything. Why the injustice??? I understand these were the schools handing out the suspensions, but SIX GAMES???

You have to draw the line somewhere
Sucker punching and stomping an opposing player is one thing, but playing what is essentially AAU overseas is completely unacceptable.

Suspensions fall short
But after listening to Cronin’s press conference about the suspensions, it does not sound like the players suspended will be playing anytime soon after their suspensions end. I cannot say the same for sure about Xavier though.
bq.“Before any of them put a uniform back on they will apologize and that’s just the first step before putting the uniform back on,” Cronin told ESPN.com Sunday. "Just because the press release says what it says that doesn’t mean they’re all back. They’re going to sit in front of a camera and say how sorry they are and how grateful they are for getting a second chance.
“If I don’t believe it then they won’t be on the team — and if they don’t demonstrate that they won’t ever put on a jersey again — period,” Cronin said. “They’re going to sit in front of a camera and say it. I can tell the difference as to how genuine they are. The university issued the suspensions and I supported it. But for me it’s different. I have the autonomy to not let anybody back on the team.”
The disturbing and sad reality is, I would not be surprised it they did come back right away after their suspensions. Stranger things have happened. It never ceases to amaze me how money always seems to trump a teaching opportunity.
Right now
I have a lot of respect for how Cronin has handled it. If he doesn’t follow through, though, that respect will be gone.
It would be interesting to be privy to the behind the scenes at Cincinnati. I have a feeling there is significant pressure to get the players back asap.

Clearly
Edi needs to sit in front of a camera and apologize to the world how sorry he is for playing basketball as a 16-year old. What a disgrace to Gonzaga basketball. No wonder we can’t achieve the tournament success that teams like Xavier have had when we recruit thugs like Guy-Landry.

He should have known
that unless he has a powerful booster behind him this kind of crap won’t fly.

I like Cronin's handling of it so far too...
It seems a bit of a tale of two teams…Xavier is on a roll and losing players could be damaging – suspensions are light; Cincy is imploding – suspensions may not make much difference and are heavier.
I realize the worst offenses were by Cincy players, but from what I saw, it was actually a push by a Xavier player that ignited the fight.
I hadn’t put this in relation to the suspension of Edi – nice post Soundpound!
The older I get, the better I was.
True
The jackass from Xavier ignited it, and Xavier players were acting like jerks (which is not uncommon for them).
It wouldn’t have been that big of a deal had Yancy Gates hadn’t blasted Freese in the face completely by surprise. And then the Cincinnati guy who was trying to stomp of his head…No bueno.

To be honest
I think Cronin is just trying to say the right things to save his job. JMO
Go Zags !!!!
I don't know
he seemed mighty pissed and sincere.
you are both right
he was pissed and sincere while saying the right things to save his job.
Welcome to the Sound Pound...
Cronin just talked a big game
After six games, he and Cincy are hoping that everyone will have forgotten about it and they can play everyone again. And they are probably right.
It really is a tragedy about Edi though, seriously, who writes these rules? Let me just stomp this guy in the head while down…hmmm “not that bad, give him 2 games, whoa whoa, lets give him six so we don’t seem weak”
Criminal prosecution should be considered
for some of these fine men.
Assault and battery is the same whether or not it occurs basketball floor.
mjc
especially the guy who stood there doing nothing
until a defenseless opponent fell onto the ground in front of him and… STOMP. The fact that that guy is getting a free education pisses me off.
Welcome to the Sound Pound...
N.C.A.A. stands for...
No
Consequences
After
Assaults
Consequences are only for non-violent offenses by non-marketable players and/or programs. It’s in the Bi-laws…
What a stupid system. FREE EDI!!!
