2011 Zags Basketball, and so it Begins…
Lots of questions to be answered, but first, let’s take a peek at our opponent:
The Eastern Washington University Eagles. So, who are these Eagles otherwise known as "Eags"? They come with a brand new head coach, Jim Hayford, who has spent the past 10 years at NAIA Division III Whitworth. In his 10 seasons he coached the Pirates to a 217-57 record and into the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 the past two years. A very good coach indeed.
Returning players of note:
A trio of guards is the foundation. 1. Coliman 10.4, Forbes 9.8, and Winford 9.9 are back and bring some hot handed shooting from deep. They are all less than 6’ tall.
6’7 Senior Forward Tremayne Johnson 10.0, Australian 6’9 Hickert hits 43% from three, and Juco transfer 6’6 forward Chiverton popped for 19/5 while at San Francisco City College.
This looks to be an uphill battle for the heavily out manned Eagles. There is little chance that this will be a competitive game and it should allow the coaches to clear the bench and get lots of minutes for everyone.
But hey, this game counts, and we get to see how our newbies perform as well as get a feeling about some of the off-season questions we have.
Let’s get the season off on a magical note!

my take on the 2011/12 season (guard play will hinder us)
not very optimistic. College basketball is a guards game. Everybody needs to remember that. We have a 5’10 160lb point guard who can’t defend or break down defenses in the half court starting for us! I used to be the myopic GU fan! But the glaring weaknesses of Mark Few and his inability to not start our best players worries me! (Pangos) Ask anybody @ GU practices and Pangos is clearly the better player! He outplays him in every practice! And then we must keep this in mind that Pangos is only a freshmen. If any of you have watched Arizona early on it’s a reminder how much freshmen struggle! With Marquise Carter and David Stockton in the backcourt defending together will create perhaps our worst defensive backcourt we have ever had! Q is not a good defender, to put it mildly! And on the offensive end he is an Ok ballhandler at best! We will be so relient on young guards and a marquise carter and david stockton I am not sold on yet. I truly hope I am wrong and David Stocton ends up handling the physical rigors of top 25 college basketball, and I hope Marquise Carter has improved his defensive fundamentals over the summer, I will eat my words if I am wrong, but this is what I see!
I hope you get to eat those words...
I see a ton of potential with this team, great chemistry, this team is very tightly knit. We have young but very talented guards no doubt. I honestly don’t think we are going to miss much of a beat from last season…Gray was hard to lose, and Meech was aggressive on D, but was never a consistent offensive threat or distributor…I believe Pangos is already an upgrade, and Bell will be a great player.
Once the season gets rolling I believe we will see Pangos more and more, eventually taking over the spot. Carter came on strong later in the season, hopefully he picks up where he left off..WCC newcomer of the year! also had a great post season.

There are a couple of teams that will be starting true freshmen and they have no problem with it at all
Of course, they have top 20 players. Still, mistakes will be made because they are freshmen, and young. But they are not afraid to do it. So I say, let Pangos start right out of the gate. He will be good, and will get much better soon enough.
Final 4 or Bust!!~
Is the sky falling already?
Did you watch those games at the end of the season last year?
Stocks can play. Maybe not the way you want him to play.
There are many roads that lead to the same destination.
Not one of the kids you mentioned will be the same player at the end of this year that they were at the end of last year. I don’t see any of them as ‘hopeless’. They will all contribute in their own way.
Yeah it would be better if Stocks were 6’9" and was named Magic Johnson. But . . . if wishes and buts were candy and nuts . . .
This is a team that can win — just the way they are. Probably have some trouble early on because of the relative inexperience of some of the players. I think Stocks will ameliorate some of the inexperience issues and this team will be better for him being on the floor.
No need to argue about it. Proof will be in the pudding — starting tonight!

I voted blowout, but I've got a different chant in mind
Zags over Eags!
Z-ags over E-ags!
Z before E, except after … well, never really.
Okay, needs work.
My oh my!
The official starting lineup is:
1.Stocks
2.Bell
3.Carter
4.Elias
5.Sacre
I CALLED IT! Took some fire for calling it awhile back but I KNEW Few would start his “vets” for the most part. The exception being Bell.
Don’t remember who said it to me but…..Hows that for “Pure Blather”, huh?
Do not agree with this lineup at all. Sure, it will work tonight w/ a mini EWU team. But, Stocks to the bench and Carter not playing the three is what should be meshing later in the season.
Pangos
Bell
Landry – when he is activated
Harris
Sacre.
Change up as needed depending on opponents lineups but GET IT GOING NOW!
Final 4 or Bust!!~
