How long does BYU stay in the WCC?

I know BYU is saying this is not a short term deal to stay in the WCC.  However, during BYU's news conference the AD for BYU was asked about how long this would last. The reporter asking the question alluded to BYU joining a BCS conference or the rumored ESPN Super Conference at sometime in the future.  The AD's answer sounded like a typical politician's answer to a question where they do not want to give you the real answer.

I think 5 years may be the max, but the ESPN Football TV contract is good for 8 years. Thoughts?

The folks on the BYU board ...

… seem a little perplexed by BYU’s move and expect BYU to be out of the WCC in 2-3 years, possibly joining the Big XII. The ESPN contract makes it seem like this is for a longer period of time, but TV contracts get renegotiated all the time, so I’m sure it wouldn’t be a huge obstacle if BYU decided it wanted to leave. I think that BYU’s football performance over the first few years will determine if BYU wants to stick with independence.

TV Contracts

Agreed, I don’t the see the TV contract length having any bearing on how long they stay with the WCC. I think they will do pretty well in the first couple years of independence as they admit their schedules are not going to be as tough. Football usually has their schedules pretty much lined up a couple years ahead of time. Half of their schedule will basically be WAC teams.

BYU might stay longer than you think

For 30 years BYU has wanted to join one of the major conferences, in particular the Pac-10. They feel they’re a BCS team in a non-BCS conference. The quality of the football they put out there year in and year out can support that. They even won a national championship in football. But inspite of 30+ years of good to great play, they haven’t gotten an invite. BYU might secretly want to join the Big XII, but don’t be too surprised if they’re still in the WCC 30 years from now.

Don't trust this guy. He lies.

ASAP

The WCC association is purely a stop gap. They will be gone just as soon as they find something better that includes football.
