NCAA Tournament Day 1 Open Thread

Figured it might be nice to chat about everything happening.  BYU and Florida are just tipping off, which means that the best couple of days of the sports year have begun!

Seems like Murray State is a popular upset pick, as well as San Diego State.  Oh, an Villanova will be sitting a couple of there starters, but they should still see plenty of court time.

Hopefully this has already gotten to 75 words, because I'm sick of telling you all things you already know.

This post does not reflect the views of the blog authors or SB Nation.

BYU vs. Florida

Nice pace to open the game… 9-6 at three and a half in. Fredett (sp?) already having a game for BYU.

Bracket Blow-up

I usually get my bracket blown up in the evening games of the first day, but Nova is trying to make it happen first thing.

by WyZag on Mar 18, 2010 10:56 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't think they'll hang on.

But it doesn’t look like Nova will be going too far, at this point. Good luck, though.

Amazing games, so far.

Horrible idea by me to have an open thread!

Samhan has 8 points

Everyone else on his team has 0.

Go at him

Make him foul. Get him out of the game. He’s killing these guys.

Thanks for making this thread

It’s been an amazing day. I’ve snuck into various conference rooms all day trying to catch up!

Most definitely

I was alternating between watching on my computer all day and finding TV’s at work….kept texting my friends score updates and they were like, “Are you working today AT ALL???”

Love this day!!! So many good games and matchups….Robert Morris brought it against Villanova, Murray State brought it against Vandy, BYU and Florida in Double OT, Sam Houston and Baylor was insanely close until like the 3 minute mark…IT WAS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

WCC

I admit, I don’t want St. Mary’s to do too well. But at least they’re making the WCC proud!

Hopefully the Zags can follow suit.

watch out nova!

Elite 8????

Nova looked beatable, and Baylor didn’t look that great either. I think E8 is a real possibility.

by zeeehjee on Mar 18, 2010 2:42 PM PDT up reply actions

i got baylor as a final four team in every bracket i have...

i need them badly. didn’t see them play though. nova looked like a wreck.

Sam Houston could have won

But self destructed in the final 2 minutes.

by zeeehjee on Mar 18, 2010 2:45 PM PDT up reply actions

for sure

Sam Houston had like 4 straight turnovers and then played the foul game way too early, really messed it up for them, but they definitely could have taken that game

by AlwaysaZag on Mar 18, 2010 5:08 PM PDT up reply actions

13 Rebounds.

That is really, really pathetic. Richmond deserves to lose.

by zeeehjee on Mar 18, 2010 2:44 PM PDT reply actions

Alright

Congrats St. Mary’s. Way to represent the conference! You took out one of my sweet 16s, but good work.

by zeeehjee on Mar 18, 2010 2:51 PM PDT reply actions

I've said it before, I'll say it again.

When any team, including St. Mary’s, plays a team from another conference, you should cheer for the WCC team.

Many Zag fans complain that the WCC is a bad conference. Then you should hope that WCC teams play well out of conference. It only helps to build up the programs in the conference and, consequently, helps Gonzaga in the long run.

Congrats to St. Mary’s. They could make some noise. This should make us feel (a little bit) better about the Zags going into tomorrow.

by leone on Mar 18, 2010 3:00 PM PDT reply actions

Dilemma

I was having this problem all through the SMC game. I HATE SMC. But it does give more cred to the WCC when they win which could potentially help the Zags in the long run. I still am not able to be happy about their success though. I would probably have cheered USD or Portland if they were in the tournament, but I just can’t stand SMC.

have to tip your cap to the selection committee

they have seeded this thing right. some really solid match ups and great games all day

by Zach Bell on Mar 18, 2010 3:23 PM PDT reply actions

Well I thought Villanova was a seed line too high

but you are right that it has felt way more competitive this year. Whether that is a problem, I don’t know but looking at some of the mid-range matchups like your 6-11, 5-12, 7-10, and 8-9 and it looks great.

Yeah...

the games have been great. That’s why we all love March so much.

Looks like Butler is pulling away…

UTEP

Looks like I lost another one. Butler looks good, though.

by zeeehjee on Mar 18, 2010 3:47 PM PDT reply actions

Butler looks incredibly solid

With them and Saint Mary’s looking so good today, it really makes me want Gonzaga to come out and make a big statement tomorrow night.

I still hold a grudge against Butler

But they looked really good. I really thought they were overrated all year with their conference, but I take that back…they looked good.

there are just so many holes in that team. abdul gaddy had to be great this year and he wasn’t.

Congrats on the win

Pondexter was gutty at the end. The bracket sets up well for them to advance into the Sweet 16. I think they have a good shot against UNM/Montana

I agree

I looked at the bracket and immediately put them in the Sweet 16.
