Great Game

Nice to get another resume building win on the road. Might still get that #4 seed in Spokane.

Foster is…is someone else. Maybe a younger Bill Walton reincarnated!

Nice to see the Zags put that string of 8 straight free throws together in pinch time.

Bring on St. Mary’s!!~

Needed to change my undies like 7 times

Foster and Meech showed up when ‘phis did everything in their power to shut down the big 3. Elias realized the refs were going to allow two fouls by the defense on his shot attempts, like they had a mission to keep Elias on the bench. The 9-0 run by Memphis after the Pastor freakout in reaction to perfectly officiated plays was interesting, I’m glad ESPN made light of it. Great job by Gray, Bouldin, Sacre, Meech, Harris, Foster, and basically everyone who came in besides Bol. He is ineffective lately, but we don’t need him taking attempts from Steven and Matt the way they are stroking. Great effort, great recovery from the refs getting totally taken over by the crowd and Pastor. That run was pretty fishy,,,

Good game ZAGS!!!

Bol

Am I the only one who wonders why he’s still the 6th man? He’s been MIA for the past month. Thinking Few needs to go right to Manny, as the order seems to be (for the smaller players, excluding KO and Will) Bol, then Manny, then Gibbs. But Bol’s been less effective than the other two…

OK So if you have Bol Kong for President Zach can his running mate be Foster

What a refreshing site—- I hope the crowd gives him and Bouldin a 10 minute standing ovation on senior night—— Those two are stepping up as seniors in so many ways— it even lets you kind of forget that Gray again proved he just ain’t that good at the line when the game is on the line—— GO ZAGS

Ohio State football

fans actually think their ranking is based on their team’s credentials, rather than the fact that they bring so much money to the NCAA. That’s clueless. Same with Notre Dame.

But in terms of basketball, BYU got in over their head this year.

SACRE!

If he could play as well as he did today consistently in the tournament then we have a good chance at making a deep run. Although he did have one stupid foul on the three point shot, I was glad to see him inside fighting for boards and getting some buckets when Harris was having an off night.

About Harris, he seems to really struggle against the bigger athletic guys. You don’t see those guys much in the WCC, and it showed today. Thankfully Foster has become a consistent contributor off the bench. I’m actually amazed i’m able to say that.

by rappell40 on Feb 6, 2010 4:20 PM PST reply actions

Harris struggled

because Memphis was allowed to play far too physical against him. I vividly remember him getting fouled twice on the same attempt, no call. Memphis should’ve got whistled a few times when E had it inside and they didn’t get called.

Sleeping well in Florida!

Zag Man is in Florida this week and weekend…..so he stays up past 2 a.m. on Thursday night watching the Portland game…..which was well worth it, IMO. Today, he has a dinner engagement at 6 p.m., but the Memphis game was in the balance, and he ends up calling his friends and asked them to wait for 5 more minutes so he can see the end of the game….which again was well worth it! The Zags really looked like a mature team during the last 4-5 minutes of this game and that won it for them. Memphis is a very good and very athletic team. However, I felt our maturity and defense won this game for us. I’ve been really impressed with how the Zags have played defense in these past two games, as they remind me of the team that played so well in Maui! Matt played his usual solid game and made the big free throws at the end. He certainly would be deserving of winning the WCC POY because of his consistency throughout the season. Will Foster, IMO, played his best game of the year and was steady throughout! Congratulations to Big Will! Finally, Rob Sacre played big tonight and was a difference maker in the paint! He scored, rebounded, and defended like the big-time player he will become!

I think the thing that impressed me the most in this game was the calmness of our players during those last couple of minutes. The Zags made their free throws, made the defensive stops, and then executed on the offensive end. To me, they looked like a nationally ranked team tonight! I don’t think there are a lot of teams in the country that would want to face the Zags in the NCAA Tournament on a neutral court! Zag Man will sleep well in Florida tonight!

by Zag Man on Feb 6, 2010 5:25 PM PST reply actions

Road warriors

They win big games on the road with no rest. You have to do that to have a deep run in the tournament. The first two games in Spokane as the 4 seed would be nice, but I am comfortable with this team on a neutral court.

Foster was the key player tonight. He had 8 points and that was the winning margin. I get the impression that he has some more, you know, he has more gas pedal left. He hasn’t shown his full ability. What a surprise he’s been the last two games.

Great game!

I thought Sacre played well, and I can’t even tell you how excited I get to watch Foster play (words I never thought I’d say)!

I really really love watching Bouldin & Gray….not sure what the final stats are but as they go, so go my emotions during the game.

If they [the Zags] could have only one quality, the quality to be able to win is not a bad one ~ Mark Few, 2005-2006

Twin Towers

Will & Rob played awesome tonight. Bouldin was solid and consistent, as usual. Elias struggled, but never let up made a key basket late, I like the fact he still wants the ball at the end of the game even on a bad night. Meech another solid defensive performance, with great ball control. I would like to have seen him continue the fast break to ice the game but he was clutch at the line late when it counted. Good thing Few didn’t listen to me and others. I do not think he is so a true PG, so much as he is ball handler & defensive specialist. Bouldin is the one who directs the team w/ or w/o the ball. Should his FT% improve teams will be less likely to collapse on him inside the paint. Steve w/ another clutch three late to give us the lead, it seems to be either him or Matt each night.
Manny being Manny!
Foster being Bill, okay a little stretch, after all he is three inches taller, (pun intended).
Best game of his career, difference in the game as far as bench play is concerned.
KO w/ another up & under move to the basket.

Enjoy this one Zags you earned it!
Kennel & Players, I just know you are fired up!
Study, cite your sources on those papers, and prepare for St. Mary’s to meet their doom!

by rnpljnsn on Feb 6, 2010 7:04 PM PST reply actions

should Demetri's FT%

improve opponents will be less inclined to foul him, I made an addition in the middle of my train of thought.

Passes were excellent, the team, including Foster are expecting those tight & close passes from Matt inside now.
I was critical early in the season as it created a lot of turnovers, but now the chemistry is growing!
Matt to Rob, Meech, & Will under the basket led to easy points; Steve to Matt cutting to the basket.
I really enjoy watching those two cut to the hoop for two and a foul 2-3 times a game.

by rnpljnsn on Feb 6, 2010 8:33 PM PST reply actions

Yeah, but...

We’ve got serious problems with too much depth in the 1-3 slots. Few feels like he has to play Bouldin 37+ minutes a night and Gray needs to be about the same. This leaves just Meech’s spot for any real flexibility to rotate Kong, Arop, Villarino and Gibbs into the game. That is 5 good, young players to compete for about 46 minutes a night. None of them are getting consistent opportunities to show what they’re capable of and develop. It has to be affecting all of their confidence.

Look at Gibbs’ line over the previous 2 games:
32 mins, 4/9 FG, 2/2 FT, 1/2 3’s, 11 pts. 6 rebs, 2 asts, 3 TOs.
The game before that he played 2 minutes against SCU.
The game before that:
17 mins, 3/5 FG, 2/4 FT, 8 pts, 6 rebs, 1 ast, 1 TO
The 5 games before that, a combined 2 minutes.
Today:
0 minutes, and 1 post game tweet: “What a great seat I had at the game today! First class treatment!”

Arop, Villarino, Kong all have similar stretches throughout the season. It’s not good for the development of any of them and will end up costing us down the road.

Just my 2 cents, take it for what it’s worth (1 cent on the open market).

by zag08 on Feb 6, 2010 10:57 PM PST reply actions

Your two cents is a Gold Dollar!

I would add: Why does coach few play Matt the 39.5 min.per game roughly since 2 games after his concussion? Why Does he play Steven all those extra minutes? The answer is very obvious and your right, it’s confidence but not theirs, HIS! It’s called floor leadership and the other 3, Grant, GJ and Meech only show a glimpse on a rare occasion. Grant appears to be capable but needs to cut out the fancyness and improve his ball handling. GJ is just not what they hoped for and Meech is possibly the best man up defender west of the Rockies but like GJ doesn’t have the understanding of the position. Thats not a knock, just a fact and GJ and Meech’s stats prove that along with just watching their games. Coach Few knows that. Thats why Matt and Steven get 75-80 min. between them!

Great post, great PU with your observation. Don’t sell yourself short, next time hold out for more on the open market, LOL.

by mikesequim on Feb 7, 2010 7:30 AM PST up reply actions

Grant didn't play in Memphis

because he is too slow to hang with the athletes they have. He would have been a turnover machine yesterday. Grant will continue to develop, and there’s no reason he won’t be the next Matt in a couple years.

Are you guys serious?

Matt didn’t even show glimpses of being a complete player like this until last year! Y’all talk like he’s been this good his whole career, when he was average at best through his sophomore year until he came full circle his junior year.

Of course Matt’s stronger, he has three full years of experience, lol.

I didn’t see Matt being this good, so how can you guys rule Grant out because “he contains many of the same strengths.”

Matt grew into a Matt, so why couldn’t someone else develop too? I’m not promising anything, but I feel much more comfortable watching Grant as a frosh than Matt.

21 points and five assists against #8 Washington

as a true freshman. He had an absolutely outstanding freshman year with a ton of great highlights including numerous games in double figures including 14 against North Carolina. He displayed great court vision early on, the ability to be a post up guard, and hit the outside shot.

That game against Washington is still one of my top three Matt performances of all time. He didn’t look like a freshman whatsoever. To me, that is a pretty big “glimpse” that I’ve yet to see from Gibbs.

As to the rest of your point, I agree that Grant will continue to develop into a very solid player. Being the next Matty B might be a stretch but he has done a number of things this season that have really impressed me.

No.....we're not!

Just because you give a player more minutes doesn’t make him any more talented. He is what he is and just builds on his gifts. I’m sure if you could access coach few and his staff they could help break it down a little better. The problem might be that if you asked him that he might look at you and shake his head and go on to something else. Your opinion appears to be that Matt and Grant are essentially par? I would be willing to say that is not how this coaching staff would look at your point. Could be wrong though!

Here’s a little insight into Coach Few’s head on Matt the other night at Memphis. You read between the lines and apply it to your point. If your still convinced about Grant………….oh well!

“You guys don’t get to see it, but that is the way Matt has played for us all year. Basically, rock solid and taking what they give you." Why did he use that precise phrase , "you guy’s "? He’s talking to the hoop media and at large to us! That little sentence tells me volume’s of what Coach Few thinks. Is it possible he might be saying, some of you just don’t get it? Then again, some of us do.

by mikesequim on Feb 8, 2010 11:35 AM PST up reply actions

Hold up

If you give a player more minutes, he will become more talented. I’m getting a reaction as if I said: “Matt sucks, Grant is way better, so their minutes should be reversed!” Matt is awesome, but the jump he made early in his junior year took him from blending in nationally to being a player of interest.

You took a ‘maybe he could be a floor general’ prediction and made an opinion for me. I realize there are a lot of variables in the situation, such as minutes and the roster, so I tried to let it go. But…

“Your [SoundPound’s] opinion appears to be that Matt and Grant are essentially par?”

Dude, I’m saying that Grant has such similar qualities to Matt and sitting and learning behind Matt COULD make him the same style of player, but most likely with a little less scoring. Who are you to say Grant couldn’t make the jump?

I’m not saying Grant will be better than Matt.

I’m not saying Grant should get more minutes now.

I’m not saying Grant is better than Matt was as a frosh.

I’m not saying he would be exactly the same as Matt in each and every single regard with similar minutes.

I’ve caught a lot of crap for bringing up the idea that Grant’s style could resemble Matt’s in 2 or 3 years, but I must not get it.

Apparently you do, though.

How do you think Portland is playing now? :P

I'm not sure you actually remember Bouldin's freshman and soph years

if that’s what you beleive. Like Zach said, he was instrumental vs UNC in his 3rd or so D-I game, destroyed UW, and was a huge part of the team from the day he stepped on campus. He was consistent until halfway through last season, sure, and he’s fixed lots of issues he’s had along the way but he still looked very much like he does now his freshman year. I expect GG to be a very solid player, but I don’t think he’s going to be as good as Bouldin is.

by Nevtelen on Feb 7, 2010 9:46 PM PST up reply actions

Not saying he wasn't super badass,

but he was more of a spot shooter whereas now he is one of the more complete offensive players in the NCAA. The way he has developed makes me excited about other guys who are unselfish, like Grant.

He may not be as good, but...

we won’t know until he gets consistent minutes like Bouldin did his Freshman year. he has a similar skillset. minutes = chance at becoming consistent. don’t be surprised if Grant explodes out the gate next year when he gets consistent minutes.

Just want to let everyone know

I’m in the mountains of Colorado for the weekend. I’m going to try and hop on a computer to tie this thing together but I urge you to keep chatting in this thread.

In my view it was the biggest win of our season. Hostile crowd, questionable calls, and a team that really NEEDED this win. I don’t care what you say about talent and coaching questions, you know this team knew they had to beat Gonzaga to get into the big tourney. Those desperate teams are the hardest to play against because they feed off everything. I’m so proud of the much-maligned guys like Meedh and Rob that really just played gutty late in the game. If Steven, Matt, and Elias are our rocks, than Meech and Rob are the wildcards and are gaining confidence at this crucial moment.

I can’t say enough about Matt Bouldin and Mark Few. If Few is not in the convo for coach of the year there is something stupidly wrong with our system. As for Matt, he was picture perfect. Big shots, big free throws, and he had that look in his eye like he wasn’t going to let Gonzaga lose this game.

We all thought a seed in Spokie was out the door but with Oklahoma an Wisconsin gaining steam… The Gonzaga resume looks better and better each day.

Bouldin's stat line

10/4/3/1 (cool) – but the impressive part is the zero TO’s. For as much as he handled the ball in a hostile environment and quick turnaround game (time-wise), that is really impressive. One other note was Sacre at the start of the second quarter – I know they were feeding it to Harris, but Sacre had his back. He always seems to do better crashing the boards than getting it fed inside to him.

Bouldin’s 0 TO’s is the standout note of this game to me though.

by Jerikantilles on Feb 7, 2010 8:40 PM PST up reply actions

Good for them!!!

I am very happy for the zags. They are a young team that now has to rise to the level of the WCC. From here on out they will have to face teams with nothing to lose and everything to gain. Besides St. Mary’s, No team from the WCC has chance to to make it to the big dance. Every team that play’s the Zags, it’s there super bowl if you will. There big dance. Can they match their intensity? They have gotten up for most of the big games and tripped on the games that they shouldn’t have. If they can win out through the WCC Tournament, They have great chance for a high seed close to home. With all the teams around them dropping off they have a real chance. GO ZAGS!!!!

Five at Home

two on the road (LMU & Pepp), Bakersfield a nonconference tournament tune-up since the WCC tourney is so early.
I do see the WCC getting three in as Gonzaga is now a lock, barring a seven game losing streak; St Mary’s is in (before a second Pac -10 anyway) even if Zags sweep, as long as the Gaels win all other regular season games remaining as they would be 24-4.
Which means a conference tourney upset could lead to a 3rd WCC team.

Wow.

No way anyone will run through GU and SMC. Cal and UW will make it from the PAC 10, and BYU, New Mexico, and UNLV are far more qualified out of the West. I think this year will just involve a high percentage of the ACC and Big East getting in. I believe the committee will reach out to bigger conferences more this year, rather than allowing a completely unqualified team that loaded up on cupcakes into the tourney.

WCC

I think SMC doesn’t make it unless they beat GU once. It’s possible that GU makes it to the WCC finals and plays Portland? That scenario leaves SMC in the NIT. JMO

Personally...

I don’t think they deserve to get in unless they absolutely embarrass GU in the Kennel. Right now their resume looks tournament worthy to some (even though it isn’t), but naturally as the season goes on we see more BIG 6 conf. teams proving themselves and working themselves into the tournament. If we choke in Vegas, we will see one (1) other WCC team in the NCAA’s, but otherwise we are the only team that is worthy of consideration.

UW's problem is

even if they win out and win every game except the Pac-10 championship (which I really don’t see happening), do they really have any good wins? The Pac-10 blows this season. @ Cal is about the only quality win to be had in that conference.

by Nevtelen on Feb 7, 2010 2:54 PM PST up reply actions

@ Cal

is far better than any of SMC’s wins.

What is better?

Average record + decent schedule,

or,

decent record + horrible schedule?

I’d take the former, but it seems to be a decent debate.

by SoundPound on Feb 7, 2010 8:50 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, @ Cal would be a good win, but not IMO nearly good enough to offset the quantity of losses, including bad losses like UCLA and UO @ home. That’s would be their only good win. OTOH, I think this is a moot point because I think I have about as much chance of beating Cal at home this year with 4 randomly chosen strangers as UW does given their road play this season.

Say that UW wins all their remaining home games and loses every remaining road game and SMC only loses to GU (2 more times) from here on out. I’d take SMC over UW in that scenario in a heartbeat. I’d take SMC over UW in that scenario even if UW had won @ Cal because the quantity of losses they’d have in a pretty bad conference would be telling.

Now, in all likelihood, the commitee would take neither in that case and squeeze in another MWC team or A-10 team (I think several of the Big 6 won’t get in as many as people thought this season, like the ACC, for example). But still, I’d take the team with 27 odd wins over the team with not that many and a few bad losses.

by Nevtelen on Feb 7, 2010 9:57 PM PST up reply actions

UW can't win away from Hec Ed

It’s entirely possible I’ll be eating my words, but you’re putting far too much faith in UW’s ability to win a game away from Hec Ed. The team has shown particularly this season, as well as in the past that they’re soft on the road. Given that 5 of their last 7 are on the road, it’s highly unlikely they’ll make a case for anything over the next month but their lousy road play. I wish I knew why Romar continues to schedule so few away games preseason because it think it results in very poor preparation for conference play.

by Zag07 on Feb 7, 2010 10:27 PM PST up reply actions

U DUB has not won a road game this year!!!!

That would be right. No wins away from home!

No way no how do they make the tourney without a road win.

U DUB has talent but no heart. Typical Romar team — great guards and no interior post presence.

The Brockman years were an aberration and 100% attributable to the efforts of Brockman. Romar just doesn’t develop post players.

However, if they win out, I think they’re going. That included with getting to their tourney championship game. Anymore loses between now and their tourney championship then I say they’re out. If it’s a great game in the championship and they lose, they still might get in. Just a guess.

Unless they beat GU on Thurs or in Vegas, I doubt they make it, though I think they’re certainly as good of a team as any that will be in bubble consideration (and possibly better than several that actually make it like they were last season). I’d like to see them make it, honestly, but I just don’t see it happening. UP has absolutely no shot unless they win the conf tourney, which I’m not sure I see happening.

I do hope that we see 3 WCC teams in the post-season, though – I think both SMC and UP have a very strong case for making the NIT. SMC is practically a shoo-in IMO if they don’t make the NCAAs.

Elias looking like Peyton

or would that be Drew.
Watched the game again (had it tivoed), even though his shot was off he fed Sacre, Goodsen, Bouldin, Gray, and Foster for easy pts in the paint or wide open 3’s.

Rob’s 3pt the hard way was awesome, I believe he is back, with a vengance and an intent to prove he could be the go to guy if needed.

Elias has been quiet points wise, but just like Manny finding other ways to contribute, which will elevate him into an even more dangerous player in the tournament and next year.

Matt arguably the most consistent (on the positive swing of the pendulum) player in college ball.

NBA & Europe snatches

Bouldin, Foster, & Elias

we would still have:
Gray (Sr.), Sacre (Jr), Goodson (Jr), Olynyk (Jr), Arop, Kong, Gibbs all sophmores, and some kid who’s father leads the NBA in assists and a few other prospects.

Gonzaga just reloads!

These guys will have tournament experience come November, for now all that matters is
St. Mary’s.

Olynyk is a freshman this season. Also, don’t forget about Dower, who only gives the post rotation more (hopefully) quality depth.

knew that

I typed in wrong order, that is what I get for typing at one in the morning. I had Kong & KO reversed.

WHAT A DAY FOR GONZAGA BASKETBALL!

*Great road win in hostile territory! Hey- shouldn’t the 30 year old coach in diapers have to pay his dues. After his tirade, the refs made “make-up calls”. Should have been a T and the Zags would have put the game away.
*Oklahoma home big.
*Illinois had a huge win.
*BYU got pummeled.
*Wake Forest is playing better.
Let’s get that seed in Spokane.

30 year old coach

that was a scary episode of little man syndrome wasn’t it? Maybe if he taught his players to have some control rather than rollin’ into the lane like bats out of hell every possession they wouldn’t have got called with so many charges. I thought it was funny how the refs caught on early to their lack of body control and called them with multiple legit charges. There were two more in the time after that they called terribly in favor of ’phis, but they could only handicap the game for the Tigers for so long, right?

It was supposed to be a Christmas present for a family of 6. I pushed my way in, lol!

And now one of the tickets is MINE…I am not a season ticket holder but do make it to most home games. Lucky to have a few contacts and a wallet with some money in it!

Now, if only the Zags play in Spokane. Cross my fingers.

5th row? Wow! Great seats those will be…I usually am in lower sections at the MAC and sometimes on the floor…GO ZAGS!

Its gonna be gLoRiOUS!!~

Great Win!!!

I think we accomplished alot winning the Memphis Game.
We held or improved our NCAA Tournament seating position.
We held on to “controlling our own destiny” as to our final conference standing.
And we did it with other team members stepping up.
Matt with his usual great game!
Good game for Meech!!
Great game for Rob!!!
We needed that!
Lets just focus on one game at a time.
Go Zags

Bol Kong is really struggling offensively, I would say he has hit a wall, he just needs to be more aggressive

by mystro88 on Feb 7, 2010 10:50 AM PST reply actions

Hard nosed.

In the first half Grey drives the lane and goes up for a dunk and is solidly rejected. He keeps possesion of the ball, gets trapped underneath, looks out to the key and makes a long pass out to Bolden at the top of the key. Bouldin cooly lets fly a jumper for three points while the shot clock buzzer goes off.

They took the punch and didn’t even flinch, then punched back.

Amazing tenacious team

Steven, Demetrius, Matt, Elias, Will, Rob all did what it took to win. It is fun to watch a Zags game not know what the end result is going to be. Kind of like the Zags of 1999. The older teams just kept cutting wood as Few is want to say. That is what happened in Memphis. This next Thursday will be very interesting.

not to be a downer, but

we aren’t in spokane yet and St Mary’s is coming at maybe the right time for them – everyone is caught on the high of winning at Memphis, and they need to win in an impressive fashion. All this staying in Spokane talk is still way too early

by Jerikantilles on Feb 7, 2010 8:44 PM PST reply actions

Never

Will we ever overlook St. Mary’s…especially considering how much we both need this game, and how much we despise Samham. The team will be ready to play and put on a show for the Kennel.

Rob's 3-point foul

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but can someone explain why Sacre got called for a foul when he tried to block that 3-point shot? I watched it a few times, and there’s no way he made contact with the Memphis player until after the ball left his hands. Is it still a foul if you hit somebody after they’ve made the shot?

Clearly, I’m more a fan of basketball than a player of the sport.

by Nadingo on Feb 8, 2010 8:27 AM PST reply actions

Yes it is still a foul

It can be a judgment call as to whether he was in the act of shooting or no but no question that was a foul.

hmmm

Yeah I didn’t get to see any of the replays…but from my vantage point it definitely didn’t look like a foul…but I will defer to you since you were able to see it.

by AlwaysaZag on Feb 8, 2010 10:34 AM PST up reply actions

Thanks for the response.

Just to be clear, though. If an offensive player lifts up his arms and takes a shot and THEN is hit in the arms by a defender after the ball is no longer in his hands, that counts as a foul? That doesn’t really make much sense to me.

by Nadingo on Feb 8, 2010 2:09 PM PST up reply actions

I’m not sure what the official rule is but you see that call all the time. If a guy gets bumped after the shot is in the air, while he’s still holding his follow-through, it’s nearly always called.

by Nevtelen on Feb 8, 2010 6:53 PM PST up reply actions

i Agree

I was at the game and that call just looked like complete BS…I mean he fell down WAYYYY after he took the shot.

by AlwaysaZag on Feb 8, 2010 8:59 AM PST reply actions

excellent win

Excellent win for the Zags and by winning by 8, I think that we put ourselves in a good position for the stretch run. How come Gonzaga has figured out what the Pac-10 teams haven’t, which is to schedule a bunch of tough non-conference road games and win a few of them?
