Life in the 2010 recruiting class? Tony Smith visiting for USF game
I'll admit that I had written off hope for the 2010 recruiting class but it appears the staff is still working hard to secure an immediate impact guard for this class. Tony Smith, of Seward County Community College will visit Gonzaga this weekend. Here is a snippet from a recent interview with Tony:
--------------------------
You must be doing something to turn heads. Tell us a little about your game.
"I'm trying to what most players can't do -- impact the game as much as I can without scoring. I just like to make plays. Scoring is a play. Assists are a play. I just like to make plays."
--------------------------
Tony's situation is a bit interesting in that he recently left his team at Seward. He was averaging about 15 points and seven assists before leaving the team and is one of the most sought after juco guards around. At 6'5'', he's got the size Mark Few likes in a guard and he would be able to come in right away and contribute.

Do we need this guy?
Shoot…there’s enough of an issue finding places for guys to play without adding another player (and a guard, to boot).

I think we can find a spot for him
We need a mature player that can score. Matt leaving is going to take away so much of our scoring and general playmaking. I haven’t beat around the bush in saying that I haven’t seen enough from any of our young players to say that they can step in and even come close to doing what Matt did.
The staff’s endless pursuit of a guard in 2010 should say what they think about where our biggest holes lie. I’m not convinced that Grant is ever going to break through into consistent minutes next year with Meech, Steven, Manny, and Bol taking up minutes ahead of him. If we add a guy like Tony, he could help shore up what a guy like Meech lacks and provide some more scoring help while Manny and Bol grow into more minutes.
Your right though. If we get a junior college guard like Tony, we’re going to have a logjam in the backcourt of pretty unproven guys. This obviously gets even worse if the staff decides to pull Elias out to the three and slide Sam Dower into the four spot next season. It’s going to be very interesting to say the least.
The Slipper Still Fits - SB Nation's home for the Gonzaga Bulldogs!
I guess my worry (maybe it’s not even a worry…maybe it’s just a thought) is just what you say here:

Gonzaga has brought in a handful of guys who just haven’t panned out for whatever reason (and we all probably have different reasons), but this looks like over-recruiting (which is to say, recruiting over a current player you recruited heavily in the past). GU’s hold on its good program status is tenuous enough that it doesn’t need to start scaring off recruits with the potential for over-recruitment. Maybe I’m being overly dramatic, but I don’t see this kind of thing having any kind of good in the long run.

Bad move
Too many issues for a 2 year guy! Meech could bridge the gap until a Gary Bell or Kyle Dranginis gets here, IMO.
prefer to stay away
I’m ok with staying out of the 2010 class at this point. My thought is we have a ton of young players that all seem to have upside. Don’t sacrifice consistent recruiting for a couple more wins (don’t think HS recruits notice when your program brings in JC players and undercuts the bench players?).
Next year’s team might not be a national title caliber team, but it is certainly one that can keep this program competitive and should get to the dance.

no interest
Would rather see more time spent on new faces like Daniel Gomis.

GG is not that good
I hate that everyone says wait a couple years you will see. No, I wont wait a couple years dont tell me some one who is as unathletic as GG will ever prosper. if he was a workaholic like d ravio then ya maybe he could be good, but he has no muscle, no quickness, and not that great of a shooter. Ya, he is only a frosh but we have many Frosh and soph Guards better than him, such as, Manny, Meech, and in my opinion GJ. so lets not bank on GG becoming the next MattieB lets make GG earn his playing time.
