Tuesday Open Thread: What's the goal of the final stretch?
The title might make this post sound overly simplistic but over the past few days I have been thinking about the final five games and how we should view them. First and foremost, the goal is obviously to win each game and increase our momentum heading into March. I don't even want to discuss the ramifications of a loss down the home stretch...so I won't.
What I'm hoping for in this thread is to hear what you, our beloved community members at The Slipper Still Fits, will be hoping to see as Gonzaga ends the regular season. There have obviously been plenty of stories in the 2009-10 season. The emergence of Elias Harris, the consistent dominance of Matt Bouldin, the youth movement on the bench etc etc. Each of these stories has been fun to follow and certainly has resulted in an outstanding season up to this point but there are still some looming questions marks. It remains to be seen how Elias deals with added defensive pressure, we still don't know about Rob and Meech's consistency, and the bench is still pretty erratic from time to time. With all this being said, the question on the table is: What do you hope to see in the final five games from this Gonzaga team and what players will you really be focusing on?

I'll be captain obvious
Wouldn’t mind seeing:
1) Elias step up on defense (a lot)
2) Meech continuing to use his speed INSIDE the offense and not get wild. He’s been solid as of late in my opinion.
3) Give Rob the ball a lot and try to build his confidence going into the postseason. He’s been a different beast the past two games and it has to do with touches on offense.
thoughts on the final stretch
Not only important to win, but how to win and what we do with the playing time is critical to preparing for tournament play, particularly for a team still very young. Meech and Sacre need to keep doing what they are doing, Matt will always be Matt, and Steven will defend whether or not he is hot on offense (we should pray he stays hot for the stretch!). Obviously, when we can do so, more playing time for all the bench players, because our fate may depend on our depth in critical moments.
My wish list: (1) for Bol to rediscover his confidence/shot; and (2) for Elias to function more effectively both as a defensive player and as a member of a team in transition and offense. He needs to learn that he can’t shoot through a wall, particularly if he is struggling at the free throw line…
GO ZAGS!
more on the bench
How about Manny Arop!! Right now, he is definitely our sixth man, and should continue to earn enough playing time to spell Matt, Steven and Elias. Bol and Grant need more time to find their place. Will and Kelly are both looking good, and GJ is finally starting to show the ability to back up Meech. If the team continues to play without letting up, they should be able to create enough breathing room to develop the bench.
Rob and Meech, Manny and KO, "E" Matt and Steven
Both have been getting better each of the past 4 games. THEY must be consistent in order for the Zags to advance. I’m pleasantly surprised by Meech’s progression in the past 4-5 games. If he just stays status quo the rest of the season, I believe he will have proved me wrong about his ability to adapt to the point position and is showing great signs of leadership. Whew, that was tough to say………but true! If he gets better, this will be a very very good GU team next year! Rob is trying very hard and I’m pleased with his hard work.
Manny can be the X factor as Bardo says and help get the team over some lulls that will surley come. KO is a disappointment for me. His play has not advanced and his shot outside the layup at the hoop is attrocious! Going back several games, I’m not sure he has made better than 2-20 away from the hoop! Thats flat out ugly. I’m not sure he will make any difference at all towards the end of the season and right now, Will and Bol would be getting his minutes for me.
“E” is in a Freshman funk. Possibly been reading his clippings? I don’t know but he will come out of it.
Matt looks tired too me. Has for about 3 games. I sure would like to see him play 25-30 min. only for the next 5. Steven must have forgot about his acting debut and concentrated on hoops cause he’s sure playing well.

Agreed with pretty much everything you say
Except your knock on KO. I think we were a little teased by KO early in January and have forgot this guys was a big-time candidate to redshirt, as well as the face he is playing out of position. When all is said and done, Kelly will be a perimeter guy who occasionally goes in the paint to utilize his size. Right now, he is being forced to play strictly in the paint. I would say it is a little nitpicky on my part, but I never had huge expectations for Kelly as a freshman (which is why I was so pleased with what I saw live in Portland)
As for Elias, this is clearly a case of opposing teams having game film and scouting reports available now….All that talk of Elias being a one-and-done should be dead now, because he has to now learn to deal with teams game-planning and scouting him, which has impacted his overall production. The next step for Elias will be learning how to dominate within the flow of the offense, which he is not quite capable of. All this means is that next year could be a sensational team (as will the team this season).
Final 4 or bust

Good question
I’d like to see a couple things from the team as a whole. First, the ability to play with maximum intensity for 40 straight minutes no matter what the score is, or who is on the floor. We need to get in that mindset to get ready for March. Secondly, for the players to get comfortable in their roles and play consistently within them. Meech, for example, has started the last couple games to slow down on offense. If he keeps that up, he is so much more effective and his TO/game plummet. Sacre won’t find his drop step this season, but has shown a lot more aggressiveness the past few games. Now that Harris is getting more attention from the defenses, he needs to adapt and realize his patent moves might not work. He can’t let his intensity cool off if he’s not getting his points though.
Really going to be focusing on the bench. With the sporadic minutes they’ve been getting, it’s hard to build confidence. We’re really going to need them come March though. Manny has been great, but KO will need to step up more. Will has been giving some good minutes lately (to my surprise), but I do see us needing both Will and KO a lot in the tourney.
Don't get nobody hurt.

Free Throws!
24-36 last game! It’s just like a turnover. (Any time we go to the charity stripe and miss two). If we hit our free throws several of our close wins aren’t close! If we hit our free throws we beat Michigan State, Wake Forest, San Francisco. This is going to kill us down the stretch if not corrected! We are an agressive team that has plenty of bodies that attack the rim. We must make the opponent pay however!
IF
It’s a nasty little word isn’t it? IF Memphis could’ve made FT’s 2 years ago they would’ve won that championship by 20. At least the difference between a 21-4 season and a 23-1 for us is just FT’s. Could be a complete lack of skill and size holding us back like SMC or any other WCC team. They seem to at least look more confident at the line recently.
Welcome to the Sound Pound...
Totally agree.
You can talk about ‘intensity’ and ‘energy’ all day but in the end, if we don’t make free throws, it will cost us dearly in the Tournament.

GJ
His body language is terrible! I’m not sure how good of a teamate he is? He needs to understand he’s got better players in front of him. He’s got potential, its just not going to be this year.
ROB
He needs to score 11+ from every game here on out. As a team they need to continue to give Rob touches in the early portion of both halves. Rob seems to wither if this approach is not taken.
On another note, I dont think Elias is slumping. As a team we are not giving him isolation plays on the block as frequently as we were early on. This is because it is more important Rob gets his touches on the block than E. Elias can find his own way to score and he has really impressed me with his ever expanding offensive package. I mean…. 15 foot fadeaway jumper off the glass last game, nobody in america can stop that shot.

GJ
I will tell you with a high degree of certainty that his body language will not change. He is not the cheer-leader type and is very non-emotional, but he is a good team-mate… Practices hard and is a very hard worker.
Additionally, I"ll tell you with certainty, that the reason he’s been sitting on that bench has very little to do with who’s in front of him and more with other things. He will not sit on that bench for long.
other things???
would you like to comment further? you write as if it isn’t a lack of skill or depth? emotions or lack there of usually speaks volumes. If the coaching staff felt he is ready, why hasn’t he played more?
I'd like to know just as much as the rest....
as I am intrigued by the potential of having a PG that is a threat on the offensive end, but I think this issue has been explored at length. It does seem memorial80 has some kind of personal connection to GJ and has insider information. That being the case, I wouldn’t expect memorial80 to come on here and post GJ’s personal things to the world wide web.
I’d love to see GJ get more minutes down the stretch, but I do also think Meech’s performance lately will be tough to overcome. As you can probably tell, I’m torn on this. I just keep coming back to the fact that Meech is a soph, but GJ seems to have more promise than Meech did his frosh season.

Could care less about body language
I agreed with memorial80 on that count….as long as he produces, I dont need to see any cheerleading on the bench. He seems to have a nice work ethic from all reports.
However, I’m still not convinced we will see GJ as a consistent member of the rotation this year, and I still wonder if he will every have the opportunity to be the PG at Gonzaga. Meech has developed this season, and from all reports on Gary Bell, he will be ready to take over the team as a sophomore if he comes to GU.
Final 4 or bust
GJ will be just fine. He has his own personality but there is no doubt he is a good team mate. He has played in the last two games better than I’ve seen Meech play early in the season…And,I love Meech!
I Think it would benefit E to work harder at reading double teams before he tries to bull his way through heavy traffic to get to the hoop. He, (as does Rob) for that matter, needs to continue to improve on practicing when to shoot and when to pass…in essence…learn to be fundamentally patient offensively.
And one more thing…PRACTICE FREE THROW SHOOTING…ALOT!!!
Go Zags
Rob and Meech...
Need more touches. We’ve seen them both play at high levels this year and they need to become consistent before the tournament. We can’t win in march with a 3 man team.
Hopefully the bench will round itself into shape, but I’m mostly concerned with seeding. If we come out and crush the rest of our schedule, a four is within reach. If the games are close we may get dropped to a different region. Having the first two rounds at home is huge and would be a big boost to our chances of getting to the sweet sixteen unscathed (we all remember davidson playing at home as a lower seed, yes?).
And yes. Free throw shooting. Jesus Christ guys.
Shaq as an undercover cop:
Shaq: yo man, can I score some dope?
Dealer: Motherf****r, you shaq.
Good Points
As I have said throughout the last month….the play of Meech/Rob/ and Manny Kong or Bol Arop (whichever your prefer) is the difference between this team being good, and this team being elite. If those 3 guys can keep raising their play, this team will continue to improve and be a very difficult match up for any team in the country in March.
Final 4 or bust
Bouldin and Gray...
Should not win these final 5 games for us. That would be my goal. I’d like to see both playing well, 25-30 minutes per game with 12-15 points each. Even with Steven’s early struggles, I think we know that both of these players can take over and control a game. I don’t think we want to see that characteristic/skill come out in these final games.
I’d like to see them play well, while putting others in a position to ‘win’ them. How about this for my goal for the final games, post game threads for:
-Sacre
-Meech
-Manny
-Harris
-Harris
In that order, get Harris hot at the end.

Goals
In the last 5 games I think the goal needs to be on the continued effort to involve Rob, which is working well. The continued effort to involve Foster, which is working. Lastly the need to learn what will be the best rotation for the year end push through WCC tourney and the Big Dance.
I think that if Manny can come in and rest Bouldin and Gray this is ideal as he always gives quality minutes and makes hustle plays….If Bol could rest Meech this would be ideal as it puts a very tall athletic team on the floor…and If Foster and Kelly could spell Rob and Elias for 5-7 minutes this would be work well as it keeps us tall in the front court….Lastly if Few can find a way to work Gibbs in the line up for about 5 minutes in the second half and have him work along side Bouldin and Kelly all three of these seem to have a high basket ball IQ and are able to make good back door / cut to the basket type plays…It also slows the pace just a tad and makes for a good change of pace when Meech and Gray come back in…and the game speeds back up…
The heck with ZAG Nation, we need ZAG Motion!
1) The ZAGS need more ball motion
2) The ZAGS need more player motion
3) See numbers 1 and 2 above
What has helped Sacre? He had a few games where he dished the ball, result, no more double team. Learn that lesson Mr. Harris.
What has helped Meech? Maintaining his dribble allowing him to move the ball back out on fast breaks and driving when he’s too far from the basket to shoot, both increasing or maintaining motion.
The same with Manny, moving to an open area for easy looks, or driving into the lane using his athleticism.
Ball motion, player motion, MOTION… (with a little tenacious D, which requires foot MOTION to stay centered and quick)
It’s time to stop learning, it’s time to just play, it’s time for there to be nothing but smooth, fluid motion…
Go ZAG Motion!
All I Want For Christmas
Is Elias to start rebounding the ball better. Yeah… GU’s rebounding is very spread throughout our team… but Elias was averaging nearly double-double numbers in the beginning of the season… it stopped after the Wake Forest incident.
Completely disagree.
If you watch Harris play you will see that he puts a body on a man every time a shot goes up. You say his rebounding has been down since the Wake Forest game, but he has had 4 of his 6 double doubles after that game. The only reason Harris’s rebounding numbers are down for the last 3 games (which is really the only streak where it “seems” he’s not rebounding as well) is because Sacre has been much more active. If you have two active bigs down low then they tend to split rebounds. But Harris has been as active on the boards as he has ever been this season, but because our other bigs started moving a bit more in the paint area they are scooping up some of those rebounds that he was grabbing in the beginning of the season.
"E" rebounding
He’s not getting the minutes because he’s fouling and staying on the bench. That leads to less rebounds per game. He has not been putting his body on a man very much at all in the past 4 games. When we’ve been in man “D” he has been beaten at will from the wing and has been out of position to rebound. 0 rebounds in 20+ min. should tell you something besides, “Rob getting more aggressive”! I agree with zag4life that he needs to get back to the basics and fundementals of hard defensive play.
Thank you, Mike.
Now, Crawdads… I agree with the foul trouble. But looking at some of the box scores, Rob isn’t getting boards either. 10 combined boards from our 4 and our 5 isn’t acceptable. There’s been a few games where I’ve watched Rob watch the ball into Meech’s hands… the shortest guy on the court.
I can understand that Elias wouldn’t be getting boards as he is playing the 3 with Kelly on the court. Makes sense, but he was our leading rebounder for the first two months and still is, but without the consistency that he had. His last double digit rebounding game was against Santa Clara… while I’m pretty sure Rob doesn’t have a double double this year.
I’ll rephrase what I said earlier. I want our BIGS to rebound more and not have to have Matt or Steven scramble in there for a board constantly. Bouldin did outrebound everybody at the USF game with only one foul.
Everyone do what they've been doing since USF
And let Steven find a consistent stroke.
If that happens, look out.
Rob to throw down
Rob needs to eliminate the dribble. Turn, step, dunk. If he cant do that- kick it back out to restart the offense.

The Goal of the Final Stretch is...
To have Mark Few continue to pull all of the right strings with a very young team. He is doing his best coaching job yet and should be a coach of the year candidate. I’m glad he hasn’t listened to the over-reactions we’ve had on this site (I’m guilty too) and kept staying the course. His steadiness gives us a chance at a Final Four run.
- no injuries
- improve focus – figure out how (mentally) to put the hammer down hard and fast, and just keep pounding away. It’s now or never to figure out how to – not just win – but dominate and demoralize the opposing teams.
especially important preperation
for the first round or two of the Final Four Tournament.
If we win out...
a four seed is a lock, and probably at Spokane considering the selelction committee tries to place teams near home to start the tourney. Lunardi (ESPN) already has the Zags as a 4 seed and he uses the same data and formula that the selection committee uses. Lose one of the remaining games, and it’s anybody’s guess.
I hope that the next five games will see Manny solidify as the sixth man, the spark. If we could have a bench player consistently scoring double figures, along with the current starters scoring, the Zags will be hard to stop.
Tom117
Multiple players in Double figures
at least 3 of the next five games we have 4 players w/ 10 or more pts (last game we almost had 5- two had 90
at least 2 games with 5 players with 10 plus pts
at least one game where each Bouldin, Gray, Sacre, & Elias has 20 pts (seperate game of course). this way opponents in the tournament will realize they will not be able to focus on just one Gonzaga player.
Arop get a triple double (pts, reb. other), Foster get a double double (pts & blcks), Olynyk score at least 15 in a game, Kong hit 3 3’s in one game and ten in the final five.
More importantly though,
We go undefeated and win by double digits each game, over USF by 20 (paybacks are a bi…well you know the rest).
