Cross another one off the list: LaBradford Franklin commits to San Diego State

LaBradford Franklin will take his near 18 point average to San Diego State next season.

We've been able to confirm that LaBradford Franklin, one of the top remaining point guards in the country, has committed to San Diego State.  Franklin, the 6'3'' point guard who currently attends Great Oak High School in Temecula, held offers from a number of division one programs including Gonzaga.

Great Oak is currently 11-9 on the year but when you consider that Franklin is their tallest starter, it's pretty clear they are at a slight disadvantage.  He's averaging about 18 points on the season and is rated as a three star guard by Rivals and a 91 by ESPN.

Franklin went down to watch San Diego State take on BYU recently and was obviously impressed enough to commit after that.  The Aztecs have always seemingly been the leader for his services but we were hoping to get LB on a visit to Spokane.  San Diego State is turning into a perennial contender for the Mountain West crown and Franklin will strenghten this team's backcourt and provide an immediate scoring threat.  We wish him nothing but the best.

As for Gonzaga, the list is further shortened.  Brandon Dunson, the junior college guard from Wabash Valley is hearing from the Zags and we think Kendall Williams and Jordin Mayes are on the radar but we shall see.  It is still entirely possible that Mark Few will skip the entire 2010 class but, with so many good scoring guards available, I'd love to see him throw one out there and get a player in the Spring period.

Thanks for the news.

As Gonzaga is one of the top programs in the country, it’s pretty cool that SDSU is starting to pick up premier prospects.

One that got away!

I finally got a chance to go watch Chelan play at Lake Roosevelt this past Saturday. I’m a 1973 alumnus of CHS, so thought maybe I was being selfish by hoping that Joe Harris would come play for the Zags. I was mildly disappointed when I saw he had committed to Tony Bennett at Virginia. But after watching him play one game…crushed, heartbroken, terribly disappointed would have to be the feeling!!!

Turns out I sat right in front of Joey’s grandparents…delightful folks. Gramps was keeping track of his point total…31 by halftime. But it never seemed like he forced a shot and frequently hit open teammates. The whole team hustled and scrapped. On one play 4 Chelan players dove head long for the loose ball…including their star. LRHS has a lanky 6-8 sophomore who loves to dunk, but Harris and McQuaid repeatedly deflected or blocked him.

Unfortunately, the game turned into a rout (the first meeting was a 15 point game) and Harris played till about the 6-7 minute mark. Keep this in mind when you see this stat line…Harris played about 24-25 minutes and almost had a quadruple double!! The most amazing performance I have ever seen at any level…and never a hint of brash cockiness or showmanship…even after a baseline slam that reminded me of Micah Downs.

Here’s the stat line: 15-19 FG including 5-8 3pt, 6-6 FT (GU needs some lessons), 9 rebounds, 9 steals, 10 assists, 3 turnovers, 41 points. How do you like them apples?!?!

Besides Tony Bennett, it appears that Joe picked UVa for their academic reputation, their phenomenal facilities, and a chance to play in the ACC. Grandma is disappointed that she won’t get to see her Joey play in person…I think she was pulling for WSU!

Ouch! It's a shame that he didn't come our way.

Just out of curiosity, what is he averaging on the season?

Surprised

It just doesn’t seem to add up when you look at his twitter history, I’m not a stalker but he seemed to watch every Gonzaga game and root on the team. It makes me think that Gonzaga didn’t make that big of a push to get him…

Can't blame him

LB is getting a great team, great loacation, and great coach. He’ll impact immediately. They need guard help. Great for LB. Loss for GU

We don't need

another point guard. We are heavy there with Meech, GJ, Gibbs, Dranginis.

Dranginis is a 2011

we need a 2010 point guard that can score, something our current stable can’t do. Meech and G.J. are so similar in that they attack but I don’t expect them to provide many points next year. With Matt leaving, a scoring PG is exactly what we need. 2010-2011 could be a great season if we get someone that can ease the hurt of losing Bouldin.
