Coaching Drama

I have always been critical of Coach Few during his tenure as head coach for Gonzaga.  Whether it be with scheduling, basketball strategy, playing time, or March results I have always been critical of him.  However, I think it's important to note that during the 2009 Summer of Scandal for NCAA coaches, his name was probably the furthest thing from an ESPN bottom line story.  He was probably too busy fishing or running camps to take money from a shoe runner or stay after hours at a local restaurant.  Honestly, this summer has been tough to deal with as an avid fan of college basketball and different programs around the country.

Summer of Scandal:

Let's start from the beginning.  Tim Floyd.  Coach Floyd took a USC program that was overshadowed by its counterpart football program and turned it into a recruiting machine that made several NCAA runs.  Even stopping the unstoppable Kevin Durant in the round of 32 back in 2007 (played in Spokane).  He ran into a scandal with recruiting OJ Mayo and subsequently lost his job because of it.

Scandal #2: Rick Pitino.  Granted this "indiscretion" happened  years ago, but it surfaced in the summer of scandal.  The Pitino situation is like a dumpster fire.  It keeps getting worse and worse as more details come out.  Nothing per-say to do with basketball, but another example of an ethically challenged coach.

Scandal#3: Memphis.  Already detailed by BZ, but another "successful" program with baggage.

My point is this.  During the Few area, Gonzaga might never make it to a Final Four.  I can honestly say I would rather have a clean program make the tournament every year rather than be a powerhouse with baggage make it all the way.  I am beginning to appreciate what a solid coach Gonzaga actually does have.

Very well said and rec'd

I thought about writing something about the whole Memphis thing this morning but the last time I wrote about them on our old site, I was…what’s the word…“scolded” by various Memphis fans. But I really think you said it all with your post and…how depressing is that list if you are a college basketball fan?

Two of the three guys are still big-time college coaches with two of the most storied programs in the country and in two or three weeks, people will probably forget everything that has happened recently. Just watching PTI right now and Wilbon compared these type of things to steroids in baseball. Basically everyone is realizing that it happens more than we care to know…and I can’t argue with him and it sucks.

Lets all be thankful

Few has always been willing to take on all comers and for that Gonzaga should be grateful— it pains me to watch games at home when the students are away and watch our fat happy fans sit on their duffs on not cheer this team on like the students. We have become spoiled by success and sometimes the true appreciation of a man will be when they leave and we realize how lucky we were to have someone do the things he did. Few is a winner in my book on every end.

I agree DKZagBlazer...

Lord knows I haven’t agreed with every decision Few has made (and I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve been too harsh on the guy in the past), but I would take his clean success any day over these slimy, cheating coaches. He runs a damn good program that constantly gets results without a single public scandal.

As I've always said, Few is as good of a "face of the program," guy there is.

He’s absolutely terrific in that sense. He’s also quite a recruiter. I just wish he was a good game coach.

Few

What are some specifics regarding why you’ve been critical of Few. A “solid” coach is a bit disrespectful in my opinion. Sure he’s not in the ACC, but his winning percentage speaks for itself. The fact that he runs a program with class is a given and shouldn’t need to be mentioned IMO.

March 23rd, 2006....

An “elite” coach would have never let that happen.
