Zags vs.Zips

I couldn't be much happier with what the NCAA Tournament committee has presented Gonzaga with for the first two rounds. First off, the Zags will play in Portland. Secondly, Gonzaga has two very winnable match ups with Akron in the first round, and then either Illinois or Western Kentucky in the second round. We will have much more coverage on the Zips and the entire bracket in the hours to come.

Good setup
Couldn’t ask for a better first weekend setup than Portland and schools who have to travel west from the Midwest. Also good setup for the Huskies with Miss. State and Purdue or UNI.

I like the set up as well. Although, being that Gonzaga traditionally (and by that I mean always) plays down to their competition, we need to make sure we don’t take Akron lightly. Illinois, or any team in the Big Ten for that matter, used to be the kind of team that scared me, because they play good defense and are well coached. This GU team that showed that it can win grinders, so I like the matchup there as well. It can’t hurt that both are virtual home games. I was in Raleigh for our game v. Davidson last year and that was miserable.
Final thought: I can’t decide how I want St. Mary’s to do in the NITs. I’m torn between how much I hate them, but also want our league to get some respect.
The Zips?
We’re playing the Kangaroos? I thought we had been playing the Aussies all season long in Patty Mills, and the rest of the bay-area players… Whatever, it should be a freebie (and a much needed one at that). I honestly didn’t think Gonzaga would make any waves in the tournament this year, but after seeing our draw and the top seeds in our region, we have a legitimate shot at the elite eight. Without a healthy Ty Lawson, Gonzaga matches up VERY WELL with UNC. Not having a dominant physical player (like Griffin or Blair) gives players like Daye a respectable chance at making it deep and knocking off a number one seed.
