Around SBN: Identifying The 19th-Best Team In Baseball

Gary often posts some pieces a bit off the beaten path and this is an interesting piece about recruits choosing average big programs rather than excellent non-BCS programs. Doesn't specifically apply to Gonzaga since our recruiting has been national for years but still a good read regardless.

There is something to this.

If you want to play in the Big Dance it doesn’t hurt to go to a school that goes every year or is likely to win it’s league. That goes without saying.

One thing the author misses is that THE PLAYER has to be able to contribute to get that team over the hump. Doesn’t matter if you are talking about a BCS school or Western Kentucky.

I wonder how many kids come to Gonzaga with the primary purpose of playing in the Big Dance? I’m sure there may be some but I would like to think other reasons might be more important. Am I wrong?

I think the 2 biggest reasons that talented kids commonly go to a particular program is the chance to be in the tournament (and advance in the tournament, too) and to be developed to play on the next level. I’m not a huge scouting guru and I’ve never personally known any D-I bball prospect, but those seem to be the most common reasons.

WKU has gotten some pretty good players in the relatively recent past (and developed others very well) as have Akron, Butler, and other non-BCS heavyweights, so perhaps this message is catching on a bit.

Before the initial post gets flipped over

Let’s try and not make this about GU v. Washington.
